De Portola Middle School

From early November through December, eighth-grade students at De Portola attend classes in the library media center to learn how to use current science magazines, keywords, CD ROM databases, and on-line resources. Research strategies and bibliographic formats are emphasized. This is the beginning of science fair preparation — an all-consuming activity that combines hands-on work by individual students with sound research strategies.

In January, two students per class are trained in the center as tutors in the use of computer-entry techniques, including graphics methods and word processing. Through this unique process, each student is given individual assistance. This sometimes means work during lunch periods and after school — especially necessary for the many students without computers in their homes.

Catie Somers reflects that "students have gone beyond the textbooks and into experience-oriented activities and curricula which are the goals of the California Science Framework for middle-school Students."
